Sondra A. Cheek APLC
Couples facing divorce in Louisiana have an option to resolve disputes outside of court. By agreeing to resolve complex issues through mediation guided by an experienced, trained mediation professional, the cost of divorce in terms of money, emotions and frustration can often be significantly reduced.
I am attorney Sondra Cheek. For more than 30 years, I worked hard as a solo Louisiana divorce and family law attorney, fighting aggressively to protect my clients' rights and financial interests in community property division, child custody, and other divorce and family law litigation. While a small portion of my practice is still in the area of divorce representation, I now devote the majority of my practice to serving divorcing spouses and disputing parties as a trained mediation professional.
During mediation, both parties have the right to their own lawyers presenting and arguing their case. My job is to help the parties find common ground that a judge is likely to agree to. Either party has the right to pull out of the process and pursue litigation, right up until a settlement is ready to be signed and presented to the courts for adjudication. The process is completely confidential, and I cannot be made to testify in the event the dispute must go to trial.
Over the decades, one thing has become abundantly clear in Louisiana family law courts: When spouses are able to work out their disputes with the guidance of a mediator, the outcome is frequently less acrimonious, more cost-effective and, in most cases, permanent.
